November 27, 2009 was going to be my first time seeing Megadeth. I had always heard about how great the show was, so when the tickets came on sale, I immediately pre-ordered them. I was really looking forward to the event, but I knew that a Meet N' Greet opportunity would make it even more memorable. When the opportunity to enter the contest at the MegaFanClub came about, I jumped at the chance and entered. There were a few other people in the fan club that I knew were attending, so I just kept my fingers crossed and hoped for the best. When I found out that I had won the pass, though, I knew that this experience would be something that I'd never forget.
When I arrived at the venue, I collected my pass and stood around talking to a few of the other winners. After about a half hour, a staff member came and led us backstage to where we'd be meeting Megadeth. A few minutes passed, and the band members walked into the room. I was so star struck, and I really didn't know what to say. The first person I talked to was Chris. He shook my hand and signed my vinyl record I had brought. I asked for a picture, and he gladly let me have a photo op. Chris was incredibly gracious and sweet. I then saw Shawn, and I asked him to sign my record as well. He was really thoughtful, and was more than happy to pose for a picture with me. After that, I was next in line to meet my idol, Dave Mustaine. I hoped for a simple "Hello, how are you?"-- I knew that he had to go get ready for the show. He glanced at me a few times when he was talking to other people, and even that made me feel welcome. I was nervous to approach such an incredible musician who is also someone I look up to. He smiled and greeted me, and as he signed my record, I told him how much of an inspiration he is to me, and that he inspired me to pick up guitar. I explained that I wasn't as good at playing Megadeth songs as he was(of course! :-P), but he told me that I have my whole life ahead of me, and that since I'm still young, someday I'll be at the same level if I put in the effort. He spent a good few minutes of his time talking to me personally, and went into detail about how there's two roads you can take in life, and that I should absolutely take the good road and strive for excellence. Dave then pulled me in for a hug, and that made my night. He went out of his way to talk with me and make my concert experience special. His advice really warmed my heart, and I started to tear up as I was telling him goodbye and thanking him for all that he does for his fans. After I finished my conversation with Dave, I went over to James and said hello. He also was extremely kind and compassionate. I asked him to sign my vinyl, and also for a picture op. He agreed, and told me to enjoy the show.
The concert itself was breathtaking, and was easily one of the best events I've been to. I think it was the Meet N' Greet, though, that sealed the deal. It really showed me how much the members of Megadeth appreciate their fanbase and how they're always willing to go above and beyond. I will remember this experience forever, and will hold Dave's advice and kind words dear to my heart.
